This piece is based on the song “Chicken Reel,” a dance tune which was composed and published in 1910 by Joseph M. (Michael) Daly (1883–1968), with copyright registered on October 7, 1910. Joseph Mittenthal added lyrics three months later, and the texted version was copyrighted on January 12, 1911 (Wikipedia). Basic concert band instrumentation plus Banjo and Piano.
Bars 1–19 are intended to musically represent a barnyard of chickens. If the capability is available, a recording of sparse chicken clucking could be added to these bars either by the pianist triggering a sample or an audio engineer triggering the recording from another source.
The harp part is optional.

Inspired by and including the poem High Flight by John Gillespie Magee Jr., this piece evokes the feeling that one might get when they fly an airplane, as a pilot, taking off, maneuvering - the freedom of movement in three dimensions.
The poem brings that sublime feeling to life in words and is the narration that is underscored in the opening section of the piece. Magee Jr. wrote the poem in 1941 as a 19 year-old pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force after flying a high altitude test flight up to 33,000 feet in a Spitfire – a World War II fighter aircraft that helped win the Battle of Britain. Three months later, he perished in a mid-air collision during a training mission.
The composition, High Flight was written for the legendary Long Beach Municipal Band, now in its 114th season. This immensely popular world class band, under the direction of Kurt Curtis showcases a variety of classical and popular selections and is known as “The Musical Soul of Long Beach California”, where the famed Douglas Aircraft Co. (Now Boeing) made its home at the Long Beach Airport.

American Fantasy – A Tribute to the Patriotism of George M. Cohan for concert band is a concert piece I adapted from the orchestra version written for professional orchestra. Beginning with my original American Fantasy Fanfare introduction it takes the listener on a whirlwind trip through I’m A Yankee Doodle Dandy and You’re a Grand Old Flag written and made famous by George M. Cohan with quotes of America the Beautiful and The Star Spangled Banner. It is wrapped up with the American Fantasy Fanfare for a spectacular ending.

Saints!!! for concert band is a concert piece adapted from the version I wrote for professional orchestra. The piece is an uabashed romp through traditional songs about saints including When The Saints Go Marchin’ In, St. Louis Blues, and St. James Infirmary Blues. The introduction is an homage to the traditional New Orleans street funeral parade that breaks into a celebration.

Celebration Fanfare for concert band or wind ensemble is an inspiring concert piece I adapted from the version that I wrote for professional orchestra.
It is my hope that this piece will add to the standard repertoire and inspire young musicians to achieve their best in music.
An American Family for Clarinet Trio is a set of three musical essays constructed with the number three in mind. Three movements with three letter subtitles, written for three instruments – 2 Bb clarinets and one bass clarinet, in triple meter, a 3 flat key signature (concert pitch), or the parallel major to the relative minor with a 3 flat key signature, and probably some sub-conscious references to “3” as well. It doesn’t matter whether those things come through the music to the listener. I just like that they are there. This is a challenging piece, influenced by and infused with jazz, but does not rely on improvisation. It’s an amalgam of the jazz and classical genres as a reflection of the influence of teachers both formal and informal and dedicated to them.
I suggest that the performers be set up in an equilateral triangle down-plan with the first clarinet on stage right, second clarinet on stage left and the bass clarinet in the center and upstage.
You can purchase a 256k MP3 recording of this piece, performed by Tom Ranier, Phil O’Connor, and Gene Cipriano or hear it on the Recordings page.
